ADRIAN, MICHIGAN -- Look for picket signs outside Delphi plants across the country on Tuesday. The union that represents Delphi's workers says it has learned from documents filed in bankruptcy court that top managers at Delphi are seeking big retirement pay. Workers call that hypocritical.
The Troy-based company filed for bankruptcy protection in October, and has asked a bankruptcy judge to nullify labor contracts unless the United Auto Workers union renegotiates a new contract with the company by December 16th. That deadline may be moved, if the negotiations are still going on.
A study commissioned by Delphi shows that unionized workers for the auto supplier cost the company an average of $76 dollars per hour. The number includes a $27-dollar-per-hour wage as well as benefits such as health care, insurance and paid vacations. Delphi says the $76 figure is double that paid by competitors and $11 an hour more than Delphi paid in 2004.
Delphi has also been working with its top customer, General Motors, to negotiate a deal on the parts they supply to the company. GM has agreed to temporarily forego previously agreed-to price cuts on Delphi components as a way of providing financial support in the short-term.
Union members say its unfair to pad the pockets of executives with retirement plans while workers are expected to deal with cuts. They are expecting to picket outside every Delphi plant in America for 12 hours to get their point across.
