In April Utterback's sister, Molly Thomas, announced that enough money had been raised to cover most or all of Lance's uncovered medical expenses.

A memorial service, open to the public, will take place at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 2430 Mariposa Ave. Interment will follow at Sunset Hills Cemetery in Corning.

In a letter published in the Enterprise-Record last December, officer Utterback wrote: "I would like to tell the community that the men and women who work for your police department are truly the most dedicated and caring professionals. They would like nothing more than to serve and protect each and everyone of you. A simple thank you every once in a while would be great, because a lot of what they do for you is never known."
