Each team lost a chance to claim the title for themselves on the field, as Dorman lost to Mauldin 4-1 on April 4 and Gaffney lost 2-1 to Fort Mill on Monday.

Gaffney must wait to see what happens with Lancaster. If the Bruins defeat Northwestern or Fort Mill this week, the Region III-4A title is shared.

If the titles end up being shared, playoff seeding would be determined by each region's by-laws. Waddle and Owens each said they thought their teams had good chances of earning the top spots in their regions from those by-laws.

INDIAN GATHERING: An early-season deal will be paid off on Friday. Gaffney assistant softball coach Dave Parris told the team he'd buy dinner at Kanpai of Tokyo Restaurant if they won the region championship.

The Lady Indians did their part and will eat their congratulatory meal on Friday, after they won the Region III-4A crown with a perfect region record. It is the school's first softball region championship since 1994.

"I kind of knew it from the beginning," coach Kelly Ellis said. "When we beat Blue Ridge in the first game of the Gene Lee Tournament, I knew this was going to be our year."

With five seniors, this was supposed to be a big season for the girls. They won though, with an eighth-grader on the mound, as Julie Sarratt has thrown each game and struck out 141 batters in 102 innings.

ONE TO WIN IT: The Byrnes softball team lost once to Boiling Springs this season in region play but still has a chance to earn the II-4A title with a win on Thursday.

The two county teams play at Boiling Springs at 6 p.m. for the title. A win by Byrnes, the defending 4A champion, earns the Lady Rebels an outright championship, while a Lady Bulldog win means a co-championship. Boiling Springs split its region series with Mauldin and Hillcrest and is 7-2 in the region, while Byrnes is 8-1.

To prepare for the playoffs, and an attempt to repeat as the 2A champions, the Lady Panthers will go to a tournament at Crescent High School this weekend.

"I hate to say it, but I'm getting used to it a little bit," coach Rebecca Pack said. "Our defense is strong. Even if it's close, as long as we can get a couple of runs, we're in good shape. Hopefully we can wake up the bats a little bit."

AUCTION ANYONE: So, you want a Prince Miller autograph but not sure how to get one? Here's the deal -- go to the Byrnes Rebels Touchdown Club auction on Friday and help the team raise money.

There's some signed Miller memorabilia there for you to bid on. And plenty of other items, ranging from signed helmets to meals to golf outings.

There will also be a meal of low country boil. Tickets can be purchased for $10 at Taylor Auto Sales and State Farm Insurance. You must have a ticket to eat, but you can come to the auction without a ticket.
