More taxes aren't the answer. We are taxed too much, and now we are taxed a ridiculous 7 percent to 12 percent for beer and alcohol. It seems with every new project there comes a new tax to counter this project.

I understand that the money is needed; however, don't the people of Myrtle Beach do enough for this state and this county? If it wasn't for our tourism, this state would be even poorer than it already is. [It is] because of these towns that make up the Grand Strand that this state stays afloat. We rely on tourism as a city and a state - from here to Charleston - it's all on us.

Sure, other places may have a small tourist draw, but it's Myrtle Beach that takes the cake. And because of these tourists we have jobs and a prosperous town.

However, it comes at a price; we have one of the highest taxes in the state, aimed at the tourist, but who pays it when they aren't here? And we have high auto insurance rates due to the wrecks caused by gawking tourists looking at every one of the million beachwear stores.

I have long believed that there should be toll roads coming in and out of this area. A $1 toll in and out of the beach would provide more revenue for the county/city/state and would also pay for new roads and the repair of existing roads. It would also create new jobs - perhaps hundreds - for toll workers, managers, maintenance, etc. And as citizens of this beach area, we would contribute an extra $15 or $20 every year when we renew our license plates for a yearlong pass or sticker [into the area]. Residents outside the beach area could also pay an extra $15 or $20 for their license renewal so they too could have the privilege of coming and going to and from the beach.
